I’m a happy, fun loving, Southern girl who lives in the Western North Carolina USA, mountains. I have two beautiful little boys who keep me running, they are 7 and 12. Cole is my younger and he’s Mr Energy. Will is my older son and he is disabled. Getting out of the house with him is a bit more challenging for me so I’m so blessed to be able to share my art with the world yet be at home with him. I live right next door to my best friend and sister, who also is a paper artist. We certainly are a dangerous pair at scrapbook expos. I have always participated in the arts in one form or the other, starting with pottery, then receiving my college degree in Jewellery/ Metal Production crafts and finally crossing over into paper after the birth of my first son. Art is my form of therapy and is an addiction that I love to share with others. I would describe my style as clean yet detailed. I love layers and have a great eye for colour and balance. I also love to bring a bit of metal into most of my work, hard to let my past not sneak into my projects.

Step x Step with Melinda – Creating Texture

Posted on

Hi Everyone,

Its Melinda back with you today to share a step x step project with you.  I wanted to share a few different ways you can add a little more to your layouts.

“Adore”

Melinda Thompson - March 2013

Step 1 – I start off my layout by adding a little texture and dimension to my background.  Here I have used some modelling paste and a 6 x 6 Crafters Workshop template.  I have just randomly spread the modelling paste in a few different places.

Step 1 Step 2

Step 2 – Washi tape is another product I love to use to add extra visual interest to my layout.  Not only does it look effective, its quick and easy to add to your layout.  Here I have added a strip of paper to the centre of my background and some washi tape over the top.  I have then used some turquoise mist, sprayed in a few places and let the excess drip down the page.

Step 3

Step 3 – For more texture to your layout, add in some fabric.  Here I have used a strip of aqua spotty fabric which had some loose fibres and crinkles to it (no ironing here!!).  Then I begin my paper layers.

Step 4

Step 4 –  All my paper layers are distressed.  By distressing your paper, even adding in a few nicks and tears, this will lift your paper off your page.  Look for patterns and shapes in the paper range you are using and do some fussy cutting.  Here I have cut out some hexagon shapes and added some foam dots underneath to lift them off the page.   Chipboard or in my case a Studio Calico wood veneer frame is also another effective way to draw the eye to your layout.

Step 5

Step 5 – Then the fun begins, sifting through my MH flower stash and finding all different styles of flowers and textures to finish off my layout. I love to cluster, so pulling flowers apart and tucking little pieces under bigger flowers creates a wonderfully balanced layout.

Step 6

A few closeups… ink splatters, buttons, twine and butterflies are just a few more different ideas you can add to your layout that will give it that something ‘extra’.

Altered Christmas Tree with Melinda Thompson

Posted on

Hello everyone,

Well it’s not long now before the jolly man in red turns up, I hope you are all organised!! This year is my first year that I am hosting a family Christmas at our house.  In previous years because we live the furthest, we always did the travelling but not this time…they are all coming our way.  So I wanted to create something special for my table centrepeice…..a little mini Christmas Tree! Isn’t it gorgeous! I had so much fun creating this and looks really magical with all the MH blooms!

IMG_0164-1

Step 1 – First of all I found this funky metal Christmas tree at one of those cheap stores. This is what it originally looked like.  All the mesh and wire was perfect for adhering the flowers and other bits and pieces.

IMG_0036-1

Step 2 – Randomly apply gesso over the metal areas quite thickly with a paintbrush.

IMG_0037-1

Step 3 – For extra texture and interest add some texture paste and sprinkle some Shimmerz Enamalz.

IMG_0039-1_edited-1

Step 4 – Add ripped/distressed bandage gauze on the metal leaves….

IMG_0040-1

Step 5 – Gather all your MH flowers in various colours, shapes and sizes and using strong glue, adhere them to the metal branches.

 IMG_0165-1

IMG_0166-1

I have altered some of these flowers…these grey flowers were originally white, misted with TA glimmermist in Graphite and then to tone it down I lightly sprayed over the top with some Mr Heuy’s White Mist from Studio Calico.

Hope you enjoyed this really quick and easy altered Christmas Tree. I can’t wait to set up my table for Christmas lunch!

Thank you for all your support and the encouraging comments you have left me in the last 12 months…wishing you and your families a very safe and happy Christmas! Looking forward to a great 2013!

Step by step CARD with Alicia

Hi, welcome to our blog today.  Our talented  designer, Alicia Barry  has made this gorgeous Christmas card, and below, shares a step by step of how she made it.

* * *

Step 1: Gather your materials.

Cut your materials to size as follows:

* Red card: 6.75″x 6.75”  (This measurement is an important for Martha Stewart Around the Page punches to be successful).

* Red patterned paper: 5.5″ x 5.5″

* Cream cardstock: 5″ x 5″

* Red cardstock: 5″ x 5″

* Patterned paper image: This will be determined by your choice of paper. If no clear image can be cut to fit, simply use a 4″ x 4″ square of patterned paper

Step 2:

Use a narrow edge Martha Stewart Around the page punch (I used Deco Flowers) on both pieces of red cardstock. Adhere the larger one to the front of your card.

Step 3:

Distress the red patterned paper (optional) and adhere it centrally to the card front.

Step 4:

Layer cream cardstock to the card using foam squares.

Step 5:

Adhere smaller red cardstock to the front of the card.

Step 6:

Adhere your handcut image or patterned square.

Step 7:

Stamp a greeting (or use a rubon) onto a cream cardstock strip. Cut ribbon notches to one end, then adhere with foam squares onto the front of the card on a  diagonal.

Step 8:

Take a MHC glitter mini rose. Carefully peel back the outer layer and fold outwards to create a more full flower. Adhere this the the top of the greeting along with a large white Lotus flower. Tuck a  tied organza ribbon bow between the two flowers. Add a small white flower to the bottom right of the greeting.

Step 9:

Paint dots of Ranger perfect pearls around the punched border of the card and to accentuate the image.

Thanks so much Alicia for sharing your wonderful card with us.

Angel Decoration with Trudi

Hello Everyone!

Trudi here with you today.

I thought that it may be fun to go beyond the page today.  With Christmas approaching,  a little angel keepsake would add a sweet decorative touch to the Christmas tree as a tree topper.  She would also make a delightful gift for someone special.

And of course, Manor House Creations blooms make gift giving and decorating that little extra special.

To recreate this little angel we will need -

MHC Products:

Capri – Gold

Glitter Mini Roses – White

Starlight – Gold

Other Materials:

1 x 12” x 12” Patterned Paper

Coordinating scraps of paper for embellishing

Large Paper Doily

Kaiser Just Believe collectables – for embellishing

Medium Sized Crochet Doily

Feathered Wings – I got mine from a cheap art and craft store

Decorative heart slider

Ribbon

Tulle

Adhesive –Double Sided Tape, Foam Tape, Hot Glue Gun

Gesso

***

Instructions:

To create the angel base, trace around a large dinner plate on a 12” x 12” sheet of patterned paper. Cut out and remove a quarter segment.

Wrap the paper to form a cone shape and secure along the edge with double-sided tape.

Remove a quarter segment from the large lace doily and repeat the process as just done.  Trim away a small amount from the top of the lace doily cone.  Position and attach on top of the cone base.  I used a touch of hot glue to attach this.

Add some tulle lengths approx. 1.5 cm down from the top of the cone to create a skirt effect. I also used a touch of hot glue for attaching these. Don’t be too concerned with how the top of this looks as we will be covering this up.

Remove the middle from the crochet doily and secure this over the top of the tulle.

Attach the feathered wings at the back.

Decorate with ribbon bows and a MHC Mini Glitter Rose.

**Tip – pull out the petals of the mini rose to create a fuller looking bloom rather than a bud**

Create an angel face from some paper scraps and attach.

** Alternatively a macramé bead would also work well if you have one.  Remove the tip of the cone base so the bead sits better and secure with hot glue**

For some extra decoration, a damask flourish (from the KC Just Believe Collectables) was added to sit behind the angel’s head.

Add some ribbon bows at the front and another mini glitter rose.

Create a vine effect with MHC Glitter Mini Roses and Capri flowers.

Attach so that it forms a decorative cascading effect down one side of the angel.

Add a starlight flower to the mix and some more glitter mini roses.

**Tip to soften the starlight flower add a touch of gesso**

A little halo was created from a MHC stem wire and also attached behind the head along with a decorative heart slider.

Punch and  or die cut elements from scraps of patterned paper and add them to your taste. I added some punched elements  to the front  of the angel and a half die cut decorative circle to form a ‘collar’ effect behind the angel’s head.

Add a  Christmas sentiment (from the KC Just Believe Collectables) to the front.  Attach with foam tape.

And you are done!

Happy Angel making!

Video Class with Tiffany Morgan

Old and New – Step by Step with Trudi

Hello Everyone!

Today I have mixed things up a bit.  Previous Spring,  Summer and Winter releases have been combined with some of the newly released Spring 2012 along with papers from the The ScrapCake Summer City.

We are also going to play with some colour – I hope you enjoy putting this together as much as I did.

For my layout ‘Laughter’, I have incorporated the following:

MHC Products:  Kyeesha – Orange & Yellow, Party Time – Anniversary, Petite Roses – Melon

Spring 2012 Release: Wild Rose – Sherbet, Powder Puff

The ScrapCake: Summer City – Blue Moon, Paradise, Banana Boat

Other Materials:  Contrast patterned paper (stars), Mask, Texture Paste, Glimmer Mists – Chalkboard Black & Turquoise Blue, Butterflies (Collections), Sentiment Rub Ons (Kaisercraft)

***

Instructions:

We are going to start by doing a little background altering.

Cut 5 strips from the Paradise patterned paper – cut one a little wider than the other 4.  Attach the wider one first with the grey side facing upwards and the others orange side up to background Blue Moon paper in a similar arrangement.

Add some masking detail –  I used a Twiddleybitz Chevron Template along with some texture paste.

Add some random misting – I first used Chalkboard Black

Turquoise Blue was then applied over the top.

Cut some thin strips from another contrasting patterned paper and attach in a similar arrangement.

**Another idea – Instead of thin strips of patterned paper Washi Tape or similar would also work well for this step.**

Cut out 3 of the circle elements from the Banana Boat patterned paper, arrange and attach

**Tip – Attach with foam tape to add a little dimension**

Position and attach photo.

Now for some flower fun!

Separate the petals of the Kyeesha Orange flower so that there are 3 petals.

Also separate the Kyeesha yellow flower but only remove the back petal.

Position and attach the larger orange and yellow petals to the left of the photo.

Colour mist the 3 larger white flowers from the Party Time mix turquoise blue.

Attach one on top of the orange  petal and another one to the side of it.

Create the rest of the cluster with blue flowers from Party Mix, Wild Rose, Petite Roses, Powder Puff and the centre of the orange Kyeesha petal.

Position and attach the middle orange Kyeesha petal underneath the bottom of the photo.  Add the third misted Party Time flower, another Powder Puff and the of the centre yellow Kyeesha petal.

Position a larger butterfly in the bottom flower cluster and place 2 smaller ones in a position which suits.

Add some black and white sentiment rubons

And you are done!!

Happy Creating!!

Step-x-Step with Gwen

Hello everyone,

It’s Gwen here today with a Step-x-Step to share on how I create my textured backgrounds and flower clusters.

First up we will create our textured background using chipboard letters.

Step 1 – Arrange your letters over your background.  You can use any lettering you like no matter what the colour as it will be covered with Gesso.. This is a fab way to use up older letters from your stash.  For this example I have covered the entire background however, if you have a layout design in mind, you only need to place the lettering where your background will show.

Step 2 – Cover your letters with a mixture of Gesso and impasto medium… do not cover the entire background;  just the area around your letters building  up the edges of your letters and let dry.  Feel free to also add a little to the flat areas of your background for texture.

Step 3 – Once dry, cover the top of the letters generously with Gesso so they are a nice flat white – you can also add gesso to areas of the background… best results are achieved when it’s not “too perfect”.

Step 4 – It is misting time!!  I have used glimmer mist in Vintage Pink and Copper.  It’s important that you make the coverage uneven, this highlights the layers of chipboard and Gesso you have created.  You will also notice that the glimmer mist reacts differently when sprayed onto your plain cardstock to the impasto medium/gesso.

Step 5 – Time to add some paper.  Lots of layers for me :)

Step 6 – Next add in the photo and we can now work on the flower cluster.  I have begun with a line of the Rosettes that have been dipped in gesso added to one side of my photo.

Step 7 –  Next working from largest flowers to smallest I’ve started with the beautiful Romance – Devoted flower as my main feature.  Next I added in the Belief flowers which I have also glimmer misted to co-ordinate with the background and the Idyllic finished off my cluster.  You will notice I have used an uneven number as I find it is more pleasing to the eye than even numbers.

Add a few more finishing touches and you are done.

Thanks for popping by today – I hope I have inspired you to give this a go.

Mixed Media Background – Part 1

Posted on

Hello everyone,

Its Melinda here with you today and I am going to show you how to get started on adding mixed media to your projects.  I know we can often be daunted by hearing those 2 words, ‘mixed media’ and wonder where to start.  So this month I thought I would show you just a few simple steps on how you add some basic mediums to your backgrounds.

Step 1 – On my background paper I have started off with some Gesso.  I apply this by just using a piece of thick cardboard and swiping it randomly across the page for a ‘white wash’ effect. Always have some idea where you are going to position the main part of your layout ie photo and embellishments.  Don’t worry if it looks ‘ordinary’ a lot gets covered up!

Step 2 – Adding texture paste here and there with a paint brush adds extra depth to your ‘white washed’ areas.

Step 3 – Adding colour…. I love using my Shimmerz products.  On this layout I have used Candle Light, Golden Wheat, Mint Julip and Blue By U. Two shades of yellow and two shades of blue.

Using a small paint brush, I start ‘painting’ on some of the light yellow colour first (Candle Light) and then adding the darker yellow colour (Golden Wheat) for extra contrast.  I love picking up all the ‘chunky’ bits at the bottom of these little jars for more depth and interest to the background. Nothing is perfect so just go for it!

Step 4 – I repeat the same steps when adding the two blue tones. (sorry the lighter blue didn’t really photograph very well)

Step 5 – Once its dry start layering all your papers and gorgeous blooms.

Step 6 – Mist your flowers in similar shades. I have done mine in a gradual effect using Tattered Angels “Gold” Glimmermist and “Truck Bay” Glimmermist.

Step 7 – Add extra interest, depth and sparkle to your embellishments by painting on some Shimmerz Blingz – Angel Wings

Products Used:

Petite Roses – Lemon Winters Song – Log Cabin Sublime – Cream Fairy Floss – Lemon Mittens

* * *

So there you have it, a few basic tips to get you started on adding mediums to your layouts.

Till next time…Have a happy creative month!

Step x Step with Trudi

Hi Everyone,

I had so much fun putting together my layout for you today.  We are going to try our hand at a little  misting, some fussy cutting and of course adding some Manor House floral beauty.

The instructions follow for recreating my layout

‘Be Happy’

Layout 'Be Happy' by Trudi Harrison

I have incorporated the following

Materials

Manor House Creations:  Idyllic -Pink, Apple Blossoms- White, Wishes – Serenity, Winters Song – Embers  The ScrapCake : My Private Happiness- The most beautiful moments,  7 x 12 Creative Dreams

Other: Cardstock – White, Glimmer Mists – Pink Bubblegum, Pink Taffy, Turquoise Blue, Masks – Doily & Chevron, Collections Butterflies, Twine, Ribbon, Kaisercraft  rub- ons

* * *

Instructions:

Position a doily mask on the white cardstock and mist with Pink Bubblegum.  If you do not have a doily mask, a paper doily will also do the job nicely.

Step by Step #1

Add Turquoise Blue mist randomly – I also used a chevron mask for this.  If you don’t have a mask, try adding some stamped elements with a background stamp with turquoise blue ink or just lightly misting will also be fine.

Step by Ste #2

Cut out the circle elements from the My Private Happiness 7” x 12” patterned paper ‘Creative Dreams’. Attach so that the pattern runs vertically.

Step by Step #3

Separate the petals from the Winters Song bloom – I have used the deep salmon pink one from the Embers pack.

Position and attach.

Position and attach the Serenity Wishes bloom so that it slightly overlaps the previously attached flower.

Make a ribbon bow and tuck between the 2 flowers. Attach this also.

Step by Step #4

Now at this point you can add your photo, title and journaling and call the job done.  Or you can take it a step further.

Adding more details:

Mist 3 Pink Idyllic blooms with Pink Taffy – we are aiming for a concentrated covering.

Mist 3 White Apple Blossoms with Turquoise Blue – very lightly, we are aiming for more of a ‘splotchy’ look.

Mist 2 White Apple Blossoms with Pink Taffy – very lightly also.

Step by Step #5

Add 2 of the darker pink blooms and 1 each of the other altered flowers around the previously attached flowers.

Step by Step #6

Position and attach 1 each of the altered flowers on the opposite bottom corner of the photo.

Attach the last altered flower slightly up from the larger floral cluster.

Cut out some circular elements from the ‘The most beautiful moments’ paper. Position and attach – add couple around the main cluster and the smaller cluster.  I also added some of the border from this paper around the edge of the page – you may also like to do the same.

Step by Step #7

Add a few butterflies, a little twisted twine, a sentiment rub on and you are now done.
Step by Step Layout

Happy Creating!
